Sean O Brien, Cloud Support Engineer on the Digital Planet Team
What is your background?
I didn’t do a degree, I independently underwent various certifications. I was working in retail for five years and after my certifications, I knew I needed to get a move on and start applying for programmes and courses.
I built a home lab initially to help with my VMware training and as I progressed it needed an EBR, it needed networking, an Active Directory etc. So, I had the knowledge and understanding to get everything working and try not to rely on Google. I like to use logic instead and then verify my findings then.
I was interviewed for a Government education/work scheme to be paired up with an internship at Evros following my training. During the scheme, Evros CIO Joe Brady guided me through additional training certificates that would interest me. Then instead of the internship, he offered me a place at the Evros Academy.
Tell us about your experience at the Evros Academy?
I was a bit overwhelmed at first, this was an environment that I had never seen before and the training was a lot at first; understanding the ticketing system etc.
Yet my first position wasn’t too advanced, so it gave me a lot of time to study. Then I went into Small to Medium business team, I did my Microsoft exams and decided I wanted to get into cloud. Joe moved me to the Digital Planet team and it was a whole new world. It was the first time I thought I was in a position where I could fail. Yet after a month, I was happy. Now I’m feeling I’m getting stronger by the day.
My various day-to-day role includes VMware administration of internal infrastructure, dealing with customer requests with a variety of technologies, managing their virtual environment, and, storage.
What did you learn about Evros Academy?
You’re in the position where you must push yourself to get what you put in.
I also learned that I prefer a dedicated environment, that I need to fully understand one thing well and be good at it – and I prefer to work with the technology, rather than people!
My knowledge is growing exponentially, I look back at problems now and think about how I thought that was hard! You need to be in the deepest waters to learn, and this Academy gives you plenty of that.
